Mississippi State University, or MS State for short, is a land-grant university located adjacent Starkville, which is the county seat of Oktibbeha County, situated in the US state of Mississippi, with a population estimated at a number of more than 21 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census. The city’s economy is dominated by Mississippi State University, the institution being the largest employer of the city.
MS State first started as The Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi, one of the national land-grant colleges established after Congress passed the Morrill Act in 1862, being created by the Mississippi Legislature, on February 28, 1878, having the purpose to train in `agriculture, horticulture and the mechanical arts . . . without excluding other scientific and classical studies, including military tactics`.
Today, MS State is recognized as being the largest university in the state of Mississippi, being ranked 18th nationally, in Forbes magazine’s `America’s Best College Buys`. The university offers its students master’s, baccalaureate, doctoral and specialist degrees through several colleges and schools, including: College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy, James Worth Bagley College of Engineering, Shackouls Honors College and College of Veterinary Medicine.
The athletic teams from MS State are known as the Mississippi State Bulldogs, who compete in NCAA’s Division I Southeastern Conference (West Division), in various sports, including baseball, softball, golf, volleyball, cross country and track and field, as well as in football, in which the university made history in December 1, 2003, when Sylvester Croom was hired as the head football coach, being the first African-American to be named to such a position in the history of the SEC.
